Why Employers Need to Be Talking About Rural Domestic Abuse

Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse In The Workplace Conference

Could your workplace be a lifeline for someone experiencing domestic abuse? The Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse in the Workplace Conference brings together employers, HR professionals and workplace leaders to better understand the unique challenges of rural domestic abuse and how organisations can create safer, more supportive environments for employees who may be affected.

Domestic abuse is an issue that reaches far beyond the home – it has a significant impact on workplaces too. For many people experiencing abuse, work can be the only place where they feel safe, supported and connected to others.

In rural communities, however, the challenges can be even greater. Perpetrators often use isolation as a tool of control, while limited transport links and fewer support services can make it harder for victims to seek help. As a result, abuse in rural areas can continue for longer before support is accessed.

Domestic abuse affects people from every background and profession:

  • 1 in 4 women
  • 1 in 6 men
  • 1 in 7 transgender individuals

With Derbyshire being a predominantly rural county, it’s vital that employers understand the realities of rural domestic abuse and the role they can play in supporting employees.

That’s the focus of the Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse in the Workplace Conference, organised by The Willow Project, which is dedicated to raising awareness of rural domestic abuse and the unique challenges faced by victims.

Designed for employers, HR professionals, policy-makers, diversity and inclusion leaders, and anyone committed to creating a supportive workplace culture, the conference will explore:

  • The impact of rural domestic abuse on employees and organisations
  • Best practice approaches to workplace support
  • Practical strategies for creating safer, more inclusive workplaces
  • How employers can recognise signs and respond with confidence
  • This is an opportunity to build knowledge, strengthen workplace policies, and make a meaningful difference to colleagues who may be affected by domestic abuse.
